What kind of report do I need?

Building and developing reports can be time consuming!  The most effective and efficient way to build a report is to first design the report needed by asking the below questions.  This should help to narrow down the data sources, fields, filters, etc...

Question  Example  Why 
What type of information is needed? Student & Courses Needed Determines which Data Source to use.
Which fields of information? Student Name, Course Name, Date Needed, Supervisor Name, Department, Email  Determines which Fields to use.
Should anything be excluded? Only need to see the Next Quarter. Determines which Filters to use.
For analysis or just records? Need to see all the people coming due on training as well as count by department numbers and pie chart. Determines which other tabs need to be used. – Summary, Chart, Gauge.
Analysis of what?  To see how many people will be out of the department next quarter for training purposes.  Determines how Summary and/or Chart and/or Gauge should be used.
Preferred Title/Details? Training Requirements for Next Quarter (Title) / Training Requirements by Department (Summary & Pie Chart) Determines the most useful title of the report and sections 
Specific Style of Fields? This should be broken up by Department & Student with the courses needed listed in rows underneath.  Determines how the information should look when the report is ran.
End Goal? Email to Managers quarterly Determines what format the report should be in and how the information will be sent out.
